Bangladesh is considering introducing support measures similar to those offered to the ready-made garment industry to accelerate the development of its semiconductor sector.
The proposed facilities may include a bonded warehouse system allowing export-oriented chip manufacturers to import raw materials without paying customs duties. The government has identified semiconductors as a strategic industry and is also reviewing additional measures to attract investment to the country’s hi-tech parks.
The Bangladesh Hi-Tech Park Authority is preparing specialised semiconductor-design training programmes to address the shortage of skilled workers.
The broader plan is to build an ecosystem covering chip design, testing, packaging and advanced manufacturing through tax benefits, research, international partnerships and investment promotion.
Industry representatives believe Bangladesh should initially focus on chip design and testing before expanding into more complex manufacturing activities.
