The International Monetary Fund has projected that Bangladesh will post a higher per capita GDP than India in 2026 when measured in current US dollars. According to the latest World Economic Outlook database released on April 14, Bangladesh is expected to reach $2,911 per person, compared with India’s projected $2,812.

The report says the gap is narrow but symbolically important. It also notes that this ranking can shift because current-dollar per capita GDP is heavily influenced by exchange rate movements. While Bangladesh is projected to move ahead in 2026 by roughly $100 per person, the IMF expects India to regain the lead in 2027. In purchasing power parity terms, India still remains well ahead of Bangladesh.
