Shamit Shome, the Canadian-based midfielder with Sylheti roots, landed in Dhaka today ahead of his expected debut for Bangladesh in the crucial Asian Cup Qualifier against Singapore on 10 June.
The 26-year-old, who plays for Canada’s Cavalry FC, will attend tonight’s Bangladesh vs Bhutan friendly at Bangabandhu National Stadium – his first public appearance since being called up. His inclusion follows the recent addition of Hamza Choudhury as part of Bangladesh’s midfield revamp.
With nearly 10 years of top-flight Canadian football experience, Shome is expected to boost Bangladesh’s attacking options. His arrival comes at a critical moment as the team prepares for their must-win match against Singapore.
The Bangladesh Football Federation welcomed Shome on social media, posting: “Welcome, Shamit Shome!”
